Holding Space for New Life: Reflections for Expecting Parents
Parenthood can bring a wide range of emotions. You may find yourself wondering, What will my baby be like? What can I expect as a first-time parent? You may feel excitement, uncertainty, anticipation, or anxiety. You may feel all of these emotions at once.
As you prepare to welcome a new life, it can be helpful to remember that there is no single "right" way to become a parent. Families across cultures, communities, and generations have cared for children with love, wisdom, and intention. While every family's journey is unique, we are connected through our shared humanity and our desire to nurture the children in our care.
Silvana Quattrocchi Montanaro, M.D., wrote:
"Maria Montessori spoke of education as giving an “aid to life” but, in order to achieve this, adult educationalists need to understand the importance and the limits of their role and techniques." (Montanaro, 1991, p.ix).
This reminds us that our work as caregivers begins with ourselves. Parenting is not only about what we do for children; it is also about how we grow, heal, learn, and become more aware of who we are. We bring our experiences, values, family traditions, joys, and challenges into our parenting journey.
As we prepare for the arrival of a child, we can pause and remember that we are human beings caring for another human being. Caring for ourselves—our minds, bodies, relationships, and spirits—helps us care more fully for our children.
As you prepare for your baby's arrival, consider these reflections:
Every child enters the world with unique gifts, strengths, and potential.
Babies are active participants in their own development and are continually learning from their environment and relationships.
Families, caregivers, relatives, elders, and community members all play an important role in supporting a child's growth.
The first three years of life are a foundational period of development. During this time, children are building trust, connection, movement, language, and a sense of belonging.
Education begins at birth and is rooted in loving relationships, respect, observation, and care.
Love is not only a feeling; it is expressed through the daily acts of presence, protection, guidance, and connection that help children thrive.
Journal Reflection
As you prepare to welcome your child, take a few moments to reflect:
What values, traditions, stories, or ways of caring from my family, culture, or community do I hope to carry forward for my child? What new practices do I hope to cultivate as I grow into parenthood?
Affirmation: Welcoming New Life
I carry the wisdom of those who came before me and the hopes of those who will come after me. I am supported by my village, my experiences, and my capacity to love. Together, my child and I are entering a new chapter of growth, connection, and belonging.
